Same but Different

I shoot a variety of formats and styles, but I don't often end up with multiple images that allow a direct contrast and comparison.

Here are three images from the same set that show infrared, digital-monochrome and digital-colour side-by-side.

As I prepare for my next shoot I'm looking to my available film stocks, and can't help by be tempted by the red scale film staring back at me.

Keira of the Castle

Series of images taken at a ruin in North Yorkshire (UK) this summer (Sept 2024).

Strong sunlight gave particular challenge, influencing the editing approach, but helped define the strong contrast between model and stonework.

Infrared Nudes

This year I had the opportunity combine art-nudes with my landscape and fine-art infrared photography.

I had previously shot a model outside for a single set in 2023, but this had been in fading light, in a garden. Here I worked with Keira to shoot several sets in the stunning landscapes of northern England in bright early autumn sun.

Despite battling some harsh highlights and needing to keep our wits about us for dogwalkers, the shoot went very easily and delivered a good range of images that in most cases needed very little doing with them after.

For me infrared offers something like a monochrome, but somehow still different, with hints of false colours and false tones.

Mirror Mirror

Sometimes a location crops up that's got so much potential that it dominates a whole shoot. That is what happened when I noticed these old mirror panes propped up in Eva's shed.

Straight away we could both see the potential, albeit with some need to move things around on the opposite side of the space to make room for me to get into a decent shooting spot (part of why everything was shot from the same angle).

At the time I'd recently been inspired by editorial fashion work, hence my direction to Eva to go through both traditional figure-study poses as well as more characterful ones. Combined with the recent return to shooting with film, this gave a wide spectrum of end-results, despite the unchanged lighting & setup.


What did this shoot teach me?

Firstly, it provided a dramatic comparison of film vs digital, but helped me appreciate the positives of both. For film it was the cinematic grain adding to the sense of immersion of the 'scene'. For the digital images it was an appreciation of the detail and fidelity which is available that maybe we take for granted if we've not used analogue formats for a while (or at all).

Secondly, it was the difficulty of co-ordinating a models pose in two places. I have many favourites within this set, but in only one case for me is both the pose and the reflected pose optimal, in the rest one carries the other to a degree (the film shot with arms wider, facing the mirror).

Thirdly, heels. Traditionally I've never used heels in art-nude work, but in this case it worked well, providing extra definition in the Eva's stance, but at the same time not diminishing the art-nude feel of those images more at that end of the scale.


What would I do differently?

Given the chance to shoot this again, I would revisit not moving my position. Yes it would have taken a significant amount of effort to clear more space, but I feel that there were other great shots waiting to be taken from alternative angels or closer in.

Wrong but right?

During a recent shoot I took the opportunity to finish off the final frames I had on a test film I was running through a recently repaired camera.

As these were the only analogue shots I was taking on the day, I missed one of the key settings and got the wrong sync speed for the flash, leaving the shutter to appear in each of the frames.

For most it cut through the model rendering the shot unusable, but for a couple of them it was just close enough to see Bethany's full face. Although I'd initially dismissed the set as having not worked, I keep coming back to these two in particular.

Perhaps its the analogue feeling of them negating the problem, perhaps its the tantalising thought of the image that could have been, perhaps the dark area works somehow; I'm not totally sure why I like them, but I do.

A friend once said to me about art and I suppose it applies equally to photography, never admit your failures, tell people that was your intention! ;)

If you are displaying the work as your work, you are in effect making an editing choice. This is not new to photography, those frustrating mistakes can end up happy accidents.

I am now wondering what I would have made of the photos if you hadn't told us the photos were the result of a mistake. My first thought before I read your notes was the black was a very close out of focus curtain.

I like II, I'm not so sure about I.

The best shots are often taken by chance. If you like them, everything is fine.

Analog photography is always a surprise. It's annoying when you have a great model and the series fails.
I think it's the happy ending of the mishap that is immortalized in these pictures. The few successful shots in the series are all the more valuable because of it.

Natural or Stylised

Today I finished editing the final set from a shoot I did in the summer.

For these last images I opted for a much more natural style, almost out-of-camera, with minimal adjustment. This contrasted with the very stylised black and white editing I've done for much of the other images from this shoot.

Personally I feel both can work, if applied to the right image, but I was curious to see if the community had a strong preference either way?

Note - I've not included any Infrared images in this comparison, as they are a different style in their own right.

I do a similar mix when I edit my outdoor shoots. I let the light and the setting determine which edit style works best for the shot. If I'm having trouble with colors or separating the model form the background- then I feel I can me more aggressive with edits in black and white.
I have leaned more towards black and white on here. Today I just posted my second color shot, which contrast with a black and white from the same shoot (Kate I and II). Color and minimal edit is my first choice, but the light doesn't always cooperate- then I use it to get creative in post-processing.

Black and white helps to focus the image on the subject. 3&4 are therefore too busy. In 2 the reduced location is the best but the open legs pose is too obvious for my taste.

I'm a purely hobbyist photographer who has worked with Digital, Film & Infrared.

For 2025 I'm exploring a new approach to my shooting, putting more emphasis on abstract elements and relinquishing some control to bring in a greater sense of spontaneity. Part of this is a much greater focus on shooting analogue, both with film and polaroid.
